OtherLand Trust Triticale

I just harvested this Land Trust Triticale I planted in the fall around June 20, 2024. I must have had close to 100% germination on the handful of seeds. These grew amazingly well under heavy weed pressure with zero lodging. The birds did not take any of this. This came from the Heritage Grain Alliance.

I grew this with hay only for weed suppression. We had heavy early rains this spring and late intense heat.

WheatTurkey Red

This is my second year planting Turkey hard red wheat. Initial seed came from Albert Lea seed and this crop is a mixture of that 2022 seed and last year's (2023) crop. Planted in the fall and harvesting now in late June 2024 in southwest Ohio.

I grow with nothing but hay for weed suppression. Wheat grew well with hand planting last year with about 9-12 inches between rows. This year I planted more densely in attempt to reduce weed growth and the wheat lodged heavily. Still produced a large harvest, but is more challenging to harvest.

WheatLandrace Wheat Breeding Mix Plus

This was my first year growing trials of ancient and heritage wheat varieties. Unfortunately some trials were hit hard by birds right before harvest. So, this landrace is the first generation wheat breeding mix I've grown from Heritage Grain Alliance, plus some Termanillo that wasn't eaten and likely a few heads of my second-year, hand-selected turkey red wheat.

The original landrace included the following varieties:

Red Fife, Hourani, Marquis, Rouge de Bourdeaux, Sonoran, Blue Beard Durum, Baart, Akmolinka, Pacific Bluestem, Black Eagle, Club (Pima or Montana), Lofthouse, et al...

I grew with nothing except hay for weed suppression. Planted in the fall. Harvested June 25, 2024. Grew under heavy weed pressure, heavy early rains, late intense heat. Interestingly, several varieties in the mix survived the bird pressure because the grain heads sheared off or the thick straw folded in half and the birds couldn't get the grains off in those positions. The birds have no problems getting my folded turkey wheat, so I found that interesting with those varieties.
